Papworth Hospital is the largest adult cardiothoracic unit in the United Kingdom. It is the Regional Cardiothoracic Medical and Surgical Centre for East Anglia servicing a population of over 2.2 million people. The Hospital has close associations with the both the University of Cambridge and Addenbrooke's Hospital which provides other Regional specialty services in Cambridge.

The Department of Anaesthesia & Intensive Care provides training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, intensive care, perioperative transoesophageal echo-cardiography, and pain management for specialist registrars from both regional, national and international centres. In addition, the Department welcomes visitors and trainees in anaesthesia from the European Union and beyond.

Papworth designated as respiratory ECMO provider

Alain Vuylsteke Papworth Hospital has been designated as one of the 5 respiratory ECMO centres in England and will provide from December 1st, a mobile medical service to stabilise and retrieve those patients in need of advanced respiratory care in ICU, including ECMO.
"We have had good experience in using ECMO to assist patients with cardiac and respiratory failure, and are pleased to be able to extend our service to those patients suffering from ARDS as part of this national network." said Dr Alain Vuylsteke, Consultant Intensivist.

Papworth on the BBC!

bbc onePapworth anaesthetists appeared on local and national television on two successive evenings last month. On 15 March an interview with Dr Nicola Jones was broadcast on the BBC One Look East regional news programme, and on 16 March a story broadcast on BBC One's  The One Show featured Dr Joe Arrowsmith.

Two new intensivists join the ICU team
1053 70 0 c0ef4b781cmeTwo new Consultant Intensivists will join the existing group of intensivists to create a dynamic team managing critically ill patients at Papworth Hospital Intensive Care Unit. Increasing patient numbers as well as increasing patient complexity, including participation in the national respiratory ECMO service, has lead to the need for expansion. Dr Herve Schlotterbeck and Dr Nicola Jones bring the group of Consultant Intensivists to six in total.
