Papworth Hospital is the largest adult cardiothoracic unit in the United Kingdom. It is the Regional Cardiothoracic Medical and Surgical Centre for East Anglia servicing a population of over 2.2 million people. The Hospital has close associations with the both the University of Cambridge and Addenbrooke's Hospital which provides other Regional specialty services in Cambridge.

The Department of Anaesthesia & Intensive Care provides training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, intensive care, perioperative transoesophageal echo-cardiography, and pain management for specialist registrars from both regional, national and international centres. In addition, the Department welcomes visitors and trainees in anaesthesia from the European Union and beyond.

Land's End to John O'Groats on two wheels!

New Intensive Care Fellowship posts advertised

DSC00491  Applications are invited for five Registrar/Fellow posts in Cardiothoracic Intensive Care at Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, providing advanced professional training for 6 months to 1 year. These jobs are to fill a new posts and starting dates will be from February 2013.

The posts will provide excellent training and experience in all aspects of adult intensive care, with an emphasis on specific cardiothoracic issues. This includes echocardiography, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, extremes of heart and respiratory failure including mechanical devices and transplantation. Post holders will to be involved in the research, audit and teaching activities of the unit.

European Surgical Outcomes Study published in The Lancet

The first main manuscript for the EuSOS study has been published in The Lancet. EuSOS was an international, multicentre, prospective 7 day cohort study designed to assess outcomes after non-cardiac surgery in April 2011 in which Papworth participated. There has been extensive media interest in this work from across Europe and the study will have a major impact in efforts to provide better care for surgical patients.

Inaugural CIA Annual Meeting
