Papworth Anaesthesia & Intensive Care

Papworth Hospital is the largest adult cardiothoracic unit in the United Kingdom. It is the Regional Cardiothoracic Medical and Surgical Centre for East Anglia servicing a population of over 2.2 million people. The Hospital has close associations with the both the University of Cambridge and Addenbrooke's Hospital which provides other Regional specialty services in Cambridge.
The Department of Anaesthesia & Intensive Care provides training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, intensive care, perioperative transoesophageal echo-cardiography, and pain management for specialist registrars from both regional, national and international centres. In addition, the Department welcomes visitors and trainees in anaesthesia from the European Union and beyond.

SCTS 2010

The Annual Meeting and Cardiothoracic Forum of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland was held at the Arena and Convention Centre, Liverpool from 7th to 9th March 2010. Departmental members contributed to four of the research papers presented at the meeting.

Transfusion in Octogenarians

A paper recently published in the journal Anaesthesia explores the adverse effects of blood transfusion in nearly 900 patients aged 80 or more years who underwent cardiac surgery at Papworth Hospital between 2003 and 2007. The study showed that transfusion increased mortality, and the length of both ICU stay and hospital stay.
