Papworth Hospital is the largest adult cardiothoracic unit in the United Kingdom. It is the Regional Cardiothoracic Medical and Surgical Centre for East Anglia servicing a population of over 2.2 million people. The Hospital has close associations with the both the University of Cambridge and Addenbrooke's Hospital which provides other Regional specialty services in Cambridge.

The Department of Anaesthesia & Intensive Care provides training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, intensive care, perioperative transoesophageal echo-cardiography, and pain management for specialist registrars from both regional, national and international centres. In addition, the Department welcomes visitors and trainees in anaesthesia from the European Union and beyond.

ALERT Team 'Highly Commended'
Acute Pain_Management_TeamThe ALERT Team have been highly commended in 'Working differently' category in the Papworth Staff Awards 2011. Their role in developing the Acute Pain Service along with the Acute Pain Specialist Nurse to provide 24-hour inpatient acute pain management was highly commended by the hospital's Public, Patient Involvement and Membership Committee.
 
Papworth designated as respiratory ECMO provider

Papworth Hospital has been designated as one of the 5 respiratory ECMO centres in England and will provide from December 1st, a mobile medical service to stabilise and retrieve those patients in need of advanced respiratory care in ICU, including ECMO.

DVD wins prestigious award
Institute of_Medical_Ilustrators_AwardsAn educational DVD demonstrating safe central venous catheter insertion has won a Silver Award at The Institute of Medical Illustrators  (IMI) 2011 Annual Awards. The DVD was created by a team at Papworth Hospital with help from Health Enterprise East (HEE) and an educational grant from CareFusion. The DVD was produced by Media Studio based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
