Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation has come of age after publication of the CESAR trial and the experience of its use during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, showing its increasing benefit for the treatment of hypoxaemic respiratory failure and combined cardiovascular and respiratory failure, including post-cardiac arrest.

Papworth designated as respiratory ECMO provider |
|
Papworth Hospital has been designated as one of the 5 respiratory ECMO centres in England and will provide from December 1st, a mobile medical service to stabilise and retrieve those patients in need of advanced respiratory care in ICU, including ECMO.
"We have had good experience in using ECMO to assist patients with cardiac and respiratory failure, and are pleased to be able to extend our service to those patients suffering from ARDS as part of this national network." said Dr Alain Vuylsteke, Consultant Intensivist.
