It is expected that all trainees will document in details the perioperative care of no fewer than six (6) patients undergoing cardiac surgical procedures.
Each case will be reviewed by two consultants (usually Dr Vuylsteke and Dr Arrowsmith).
Trainees are required to document the following information:
- Patient registration details.
- Planned / actual surgical procedure.
- Consultant surgeon.
- Supervsiing consultant anaesthetist.
- Risk assessment - Parsonnet and EuroSCORE.
- The patient's medical and surgical history.
- Current medication, drug allergies and sensitivities.
- Results of laboratory and special cardiological investigations.
- Anaesthetic issues.
- A summary of the anaesthetic management.
- Preoperative, perioperative and postoperative TOE finding (where appropriate).
- A summary of the operative procedure.
- Supportive measures used in the operating theatre.
- Postoperative (ICU) care.
- Overall summary and commentary.
Completed case records should be filed in the trainee's portfolio.
